Recently, I started a home improvement project. My wife decided that we ( meaning “I”) should put up some crown molding in one of the rooms in our house. I’d never done this before, but I am a relatively smart guy. How hard could it be? So I went off to the hardware store to find the materials I need.
Upon arriving, I went in search of a friendly associate to help me. I wandered up and down several aisles, with no luck. It almost seemed like the associates were trying to avoid me! Finally, I spotted an older gentleman making busy work at the end of one aisle. His name tag said “My name is Hank. How may I help you?” – but his face said “Keep moving, buddy.” When I asked for assistance, he sighed and rolled his eyes, half-listened to what I needed, and said he’d be right back. I never saw him again. Finally, I threw up my arms and decided to leave.
I went to the other hardware store down the street, but I didn’t really think things would be any different there. At the door, I was met by an associate – let’s call him Eric. “You look frustrated.,” he said. At this point, I just expected lip service, so I stated that my wife wanted me to do a project, and I couldn’t find what I needed. He smiled and asked, “What can I do to help you be a hero to your wife?” I smiled back. When I told him my whole story, Eric led me to the trim aisle to help me pick out the right tools and supplies for the job. It turned out that Eric also worked with his dad as a trim carpenter! He gave me some helpful tips and tricks, and said to come talk to him again if I got stuck or had any questions. Also, other associates smiled and said hello as they passed us, even joined in the conversation a few times. The whole place just had a different “feel” to it.
I left this store with a good plan – plus, I knew that I had a “guy” in my back pocket if I needed him. I went back a few times for supplies and guidance, and in about two weeks, I had some beautiful crown molding, and my wife was elated. Since then, Eric and I have become friends. Because of his help, I feel more confident with home improvement, so I’m doing more projects! I visit that hardware store often, and when I need any sort of help, Eric is my guy. I trust his experience and his opinion – and if he doesn’t know something, he knows which associate in the store will be the best one to help me.
